Doel. Op deze website vindt u een overzicht van de vruchten van literatuurstudie naar het functioneren van ons zenuwstelsel bij gezondheid en ziekte. Bij ziekte denken we in het verband van deze site vooral aan psychisch ziek zijn, maar de afbakening naar wat we doorgaans neurologische ziekten noemen is niet scherp; er zijn nogal wat neurologische ziektebeelden die ook tot “anders” psychisch functioneren leiden. Deze studie betreft grotendeels literatuur vanaf internet, met Google en PubMed. De auteur had niet de beschikking over een laboratorium of kliniek of een patiëntengroep om nader onderzoek te doen. Delen van deze studie zijn eerder (2013) gepubliceerd in het boekje “Het geloof nu” (Uitgeverij Boekscout), maar ze zijn wel gereviseerd op basis van meer actuele bevindingen. Doel van deze studie is te inventariseren van wat er bekend is van en nadenken over de samenhang van deze onderwerpen.
Inhoud. Als we iets willen begrijpen over ziekten van het zenuwstelsel zullen we toch eerst moeten weten hoe de zenuwcel in elkaar steekt en hoe hij werkt. Dit is beschreven in artikel 2a. Vervolgens moeten we er achter komen hoe zenuwcellen met elkaar samenwerken, artikel 2b. Daarom wordt dat eerst besproken. Vervolgens zullen we moeten begrijpen hoe we aankijken tegen ziekte en het functioneren van het lichaam in het algemeen en het zenuwstelsel in het bijzonder, in gezondheid en ziekte (artikel 3 en 3 a). Daarbij is van belang hoe we de mens zien: als een ingewikkeld biologisch apparaat of als iets anders (artikel 4). Daarna gaan we in op het ziektebeeld schizofrenie (artikel 5a en 5b, in 5c worden deze kort in het Engels samengevat), en tenslotte bekijken we of we hetgeen we geleerd hebben bij schizofrenie ook kunnen toepassen bij andere ziektebeelden (artikel 6 en 7).
Auteur. De auteur van deze website is een gepensioneerd arts. Hij is geen specialist op psychiatrisch of neurologisch terrein, maar kent wel de manier van denken binnen beide specialismen. Algemeen medische kennis heeft hij echter wel. Nadeel van het ontbreken van specialistische kennis is dat niet alle aspecten van een ziektebeeld –voor zover die bekend zijn- doorgrond worden, voordeel ervan is dat je niet gebonden wordt door paradigmata van binnen een specialisme, waardoor “frisse” ideeën makkelijker een kans krijgen dan bij “oude rotten in het vak”.
Methodiek. De opbouw die gevolgd wordt is voor elk deel steeds dezelfde: Allereerst wordt een inleiding gegeven op het deelonderwerp, vervolgens worden de verzamelde literatuurgegevens weergegeven, daarna worden die besproken en tenslotte wordt een conclusie getrokken (als dat mogelijk is). Bij het kiezen van de onderwerpen worden soms “zijstapjes” gemaakt naar zaken die op het eerste gezicht niet bij het thema horen, maar die bij nader inzien wel een rol spelen bij het benaderen van de thematiek. Het gaat daarbij om een (technische) bespreking van de ICF/ICD en om een (filosofisch georiënteerd) gedeelte over het mensbeeld. Naar beide wordt soms in andere delen verwezen. Bij elk onderdeel wordt in een koptekst of voettekst aangegeven wanneer het voor het laatst gereviseerd is. General introduction.

Aim. In this website you will find an overview of the results of study of literature about the functioning of our nervous system in health and disease. When we mention disease we consider in the perspective of this website especially mental illness, but the border with what we used to call neurological disease is not sharp; quite a number of neurological disorders cause a ‘different’ psychological functioning. This study concerns mainly literature from internet with Google and PubMed. The author dit not have a laboratory or a clinic or a group of patients at his disposition to perform further investigation. Parts of this study have been published before ( in Dutch) in a book: “Het geloof nu” (Editor Boekscout). However these parts have been revised based on more actual findings. Ain of this study is to get a picture of what is known about these subjects and which is the coherence thereof.
Contents. If we want to understand something of diseases of the nervous system we will firstly have to know the construction of the nervous cell and the working thereof. This has bene described in article 2a. Net we must find out how nervous cells cooperate article 2b. Therefore this is discussed first. Next we have to get clear how we see disease en functioning of the body in general and the nervous system particularly, in health and disease ( article 3 and 3a). Hereby it is important how we see mankind: a complicated biological apparatus or something else (article 4). Thereafter we deal with the disease of schizophrenia ( article 5a and 5b; in 5c there is a short summary of both), and finally we consider whether we may apply the matters which we learned in schizophrenia also in other disorders (article 6 and 7).
Author. The author of this website is a retired medical doctor. He is not a specialist in the fields of psychiatry or neurology, but knows the ways of thinking within both specialisms. He has general medical knowledge. Disadvantage of the lack of specialist knowledge is that not all the aspects of a disorder – as far as that is known- will be understood, advantage is however that one is not bound by paradigm’s from a specialism, which makes that fresh ideas get more opportunity.
Method. The way of description is for every part the same: First an introduction is given on the subject, next the literature is presented, than discussed en finally, when that is possible, a conclusion will be drawn. In discussing a subject sometime is elaborate to matters which at first glance seem to have no bearing with the theme, but which at second glance platy a role in the approach of the theme. This is especially applicable in the (technical) discussion of ICF/ICD and in the (philosophically orientated) part about mankind. In other articles there is sometimes referred to these. In each article is indicated in a head text when the article was revised for the last time. Not so long ago (2021) a chapter about addiction was added. All articles are revised recently (2024);
